Transport Access to the Hideaways

The Supacat

Our vision for Starbed Hideaways is more than a little bit inspired by the glamourous safaris of the 1920s. It was a golden age of couture, comfort and swashbuckling adventure in remote wild settings. Transportation – be it bi-plane, sea-plane, ox-cart or mule, was part of the romance. This being Dartmoor in the twenty-first century, things have moved on. Though one could argue that the transport is only marginally less eccentric.

Because the Hideaways are remote and you can’t access them by car, Bertie will drop you and your luggage up the hill in Brian. That’s our Supacat. Named after the BBC’s ex-popstar and stellar heart-throb, Mr Cox. Brian’s a busy chap, available on arrival and departure only. You will need a sense of humour. The rest of the time, it’s a 10 minute walk to and from the Hideaways so you need stout footwear and a stoic attitude to gradient. But the views and solitude are worth it.

We recommend travel by car as this is the easiest means of getting around the area, but guests can arrive by taxi, train or bus and some have even come by bicycle – for which we can provide storage. Parking is limited to 1 per hut, if you have no alternative but to bring another car or are expecting visitors during your stay please call us so we can make arrangements for additional parking.

Check in is from 4pm but may be possible to arrive earlier by prior arrangement. Please plan your journey to ensure you arrive before 6pm as we need time to show you how everything works and given their gloriously secluded locations doing so is much easier in the daylight. Part of our attraction is the dark nights, the stars are simply stunning!

We email detailed instructions prior to your arrival to enable you to find us with ease, our Location page shows our exact location and offers the more useful postcode to pinpoint us with a Sat Nav. Please drive slowly when coming onto the estate as the resident duck is hugely friendly but doesn’t have much car sense and being open to the National Trust visitors between 10.30-5.30 there are pedestrians about – always an idea to watch out for them too! Guests are asked to call shortly half an hour before arrival so we can have the Supacat ready to transfer you with your luggage up the hill, if you drive down to the house initially we can show you your allocated parking (one per Hideaway) and transfer your bags. Halcyon and Aurora are a 10 minute walk from the parking area, primarily along stoned tracks with the last section being across a field, as such appropriate footwear is required whatever the season as whilst guests and their luggage are transferred at check in and check out, the huts can otherwise only be accessed on foot.

Torches are provided for your night time strolling.
